Another extreme cold warning has gripped the region.

Dan Kulak, meteorologist for Environment Canada says this may be the result of the “polar vortex.”

“It’s called the arctic air mass, it covers much of North America during the winter time, sometimes cold air moves south and you get these cold snaps, generally cold air is a fact of life across northern Canada and Fort McMurray this time of year,” said Kulak.

He says the cool air will remain throughout the week and possibly beyond the seven-day forecast.

In efforts to keep members of our community safe and warm many organizations are extending their services.

The Centre of Hope day time drop-in centre is open every day of the year from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Due to the extremely cold weather in Wood Buffalo this week, Marshal House will be open for 24-hours until Feb. 10, 2019. Marshal House is an emergency shelter located downtown on the corner of Marshal Street and Manning Avenue.

The Salvation Army Shelter will provide a warm meal and bed to anyone in need with their out of the cold overnight mat program from 4 p.m. to 8:30 a.m.

The shelter is located at 9919 Macdonald Ave.

They are also accepting donations.

“Given the extreme demand right now from our patrons we are in need of gloves and hats,” said Major Hibbs.

Coats, books and other clothing items are also needed as well as financial donations and volunteer opportunities.
