There will be plenty to discuss at tomorrow’s Council meeting.
RMWB council will meet for the first time since the marathon sessions a month ago concerning the moratorium on camp accommodations. Instead, council will examine three new issues.
Community Plan on Homelessness
The Community Plan on Homelessness annually grants funds to community charities and organizations fighting homelessness.
More attention will focus on the 10 Year Plan to End Homelessness, which the Municipality entered in 2010.
The municipality would award $3,986,013 to community groups in the upcoming 2019-2020 Community Plan on Homelessness, and an additional $55,000 in this year’s plan.
Unemployment increased in Wood Buffalo in the month of December due in part to losses in construction and energy sectors.
Cannabis Retail Stores
Council should table the motion to decide where cannabis retail stores can set up shop in Wood Buffalo tomorrow.
Discussions and debate on camp accommodations forced a rescheduling of the motion from two months prior.
Shell Place
Discussion on the construction and remodelling of Shell Place couldn’t come at a better time.
Council will vote on turning Shell Place into an all-weather, indoor stadium.
About $7 million from the Capital Infrastructure Reserve would go into the completion of the project.
Council will also hear the proposed budget for the work, which includes $89 million for a new facility, $7.2 million for site services, $7 million for architectural services and $13 million for furniture fixtures & equipment.
Wood Buffalo was selected as the host for the 2022 Arctic Winter Games, and the positive feedback and revenue generated from the city hosting of the ASAA Alberta Bowl should contribute to the debate.
