Last year’s Alberta Bowl at SMS Equipment Stadium was “super” for Wood Buffalo.
During the two-day high school football championship last November, the local economy received a boost of $170,000.
Fort McMurray’s Sport Tourism Coordinator for Fort McMurray Tourism, Tyler Cole, was “thrilled” with the news.
“We have world-class sport facilities here in Wood Buffalo and are thrilled that the ASAA Alberta Bowl was such an overwhelming success. The teams and spectators really enjoyed their time in our region and the opportunity to compete in a stadium which has hosted CFL games, we can’t wait to welcome them back in the future!”
The Alberta Schools’ Athletic Association (ASAA) Alberta Bowl is an annual competition featuring high school football programs from across the province.
More than half of the players, coaches, parents, volunteers and event organizers for the 2018 ASAA Alberta Bowl surveyed said this was their first time visiting Fort McMurray.
The news comes just in time as RMWB Council meets to decide on the remodelling of Shell Place into an all-weather indoor venue for the 2022 Arctic Winter Games.
