Changes may come to the function of photo radar in Wood Buffalo.

Alberta Minister of Transportation, Brian Mason, said current operations made “marginal” benefits to road safety across the province.

Mason also said traffic safety, and not revenue, is the goal of any photo radar program.

“Photo radar operations must contribute to significant traffic safety outcomes, like reducing collisions and saving lives. We are updating the provincial photo radar guidelines to provide the direction and clarity that municipalities and police agencies need in order to focus on safety.”

An independent, third-party review of photo radar in the province suggests Alberta make the necessary changes to improve transparency and provide better results.

The province will assist municipalities like Wood Buffalo in adjusting photo radar programs.

What does it mean for you?

  • Law enforcement must provide collision data to support photo radar programs designed to enhance public safety
  • Prohibition of photo radar on high-speed multi-lane roads and transition zones, unless there is a specific safety concern.
  • Annual reports on photo radar program successes in traffic safety
  • Photo radar will be maintained in school zones, playground areas, and construction zones.
