Changes may come to the function of photo radar in Wood Buffalo.
Alberta Minister of Transportation, Brian Mason, said current operations made “marginal” benefits to road safety across the province.
Mason also said traffic safety, and not revenue, is the goal of any photo radar program.
“Photo radar operations must contribute to significant traffic safety outcomes, like reducing collisions and saving lives. We are updating the provincial photo radar guidelines to provide the direction and clarity that municipalities and police agencies need in order to focus on safety.”
An independent, third-party review of photo radar in the province suggests Alberta make the necessary changes to improve transparency and provide better results.
The province will assist municipalities like Wood Buffalo in adjusting photo radar programs.
