Cenovus Energy has made a $50,000 donation to Northland School Division (NSD) No. 61.

The funding will be spread across multiple literacy programs, including $20,000 to the summer reading program, $20,000 for professional learning and $10,000 for other projects.

Gord Atkinson, Superintendent of Schools said in a statement that NSD has a goal to have 10 per cent more students reading at grade level and the continued support from Cenovus will help students succeed.

Leanne Courchesne, Cenovus Group Lead, Community Investment said increasing child literacy rates is a part of the company’s community investment focus of “giving youth a chance.”

“The work that NSD is doing with the Literacy Initiative will help improve student engagement and as a result increase graduation rates across the Division in the short and long term.”

Cenovus has been a longtime supporter of schools in the company’s local communities. It’s been supporting NSD’s focus on literacy since 2014.

NSD has 20 schools located in municipalities, First Nation reserves, and Métis Settlements across northern Alberta.
