Explore making and creating at Keyano College conference

Explore the art of creation this weekend at Keyano College.

The 7th Annual Keyano College University Studies Conference aims to understand the things we make, from art to discoveries.

You can learn more about what it means to make, unmake and even remake our world through interactive activities and demonstrations.

You’ll also learn about topics like ethics of scientific making, making connections in Northern communities and creation across different areas of study.

An interactive portion of the conference will have participants create a song together while event organizer and Keyano English Instructor, Dr. Ryan J. Cox is on stage with a guitar.

Physician-scientist, innovator and educator, Dr. Julielynn Wong will be the keynote speaker at the event.

Wong will talk about founding Medical Makers, which is a global community that aims to benefit the world through low-cost technologies.

She said that Medical Makers is working to reduce education fees by 3D printing cheaper, high-quality science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education supplies.

“Education is a vaccine against poverty and builds mental resilience. Over 90% of the world’s population do not hold university degrees… One reason why is that students can’t afford to pay their academic fees.”

She’ll also launch Medical Makers YMM and host the inaugural Medical Makers YMM Make-a-thon on March 10. The Make-a-thon will give you the opportunity to create a 3D printable design and learn more about our local chapter.

The conference runs March 9 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and the Make-a-thon runs March 10 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., both at Keyano College.
