Huskies to put best "fut" forward in Lethbridge

Keyano Huskies goalie Emma Jones (left) and Taylor Fraser-Chaba of the women's futsal team share a laugh; Benjamin Fonkou of the men's team. Both will play in the ACAC futsal championships this weekend in Lethbridge, Alta., beginning March 15, 2019.

Keyano College has a proud tradition of indoor soccer or “futsal” excellence.

From March 15-17, 2019, both the Huskies men’s and women’s futsal teams will be in Lethbridge for the ACAC Futsal Championships.

Macky Singh coaches both teams, but it’s the men’s squad returning to the finals to repeat as defending champs.

In the seven years the ACAC held championships, Keyano never placed outside of the top three in men’s competition winning five gold medals.

The women’s squad also has a measure of success winning one silver medal and three bronze medals.

Competition

The Huskies men’s team plays Lakeland at 11 a.m. and then Kings University at 4:15 p.m. on Friday, March 15, before facing SAIT on Saturday, March 16 at 11 a.m.

A good showing means Keyano would play in the Championship draw on Sunday.

Meanwhile, the Huskies women’s team plays Olds College at 12:15 p.m. and Medicine Hat at 4:15 p.m. on Friday, March 15, and then Kings University on Saturday, March 16 at 2 p.m.

Spots in the Championship are up for grabs on Sunday, so the Huskies will go for double gold.
