Man who wrongly spent 30 years in prison plans half marathon

NEW YORK — A man who was wrongfully incarcerated for 30 years plans to celebrate his freedom by running a New York City half marathon this month.

Forty-eight-year-old Mark Denny was convicted at the age of 17 in 1988, and maintained his innocence throughout his incarceration. The Wall Street Journal reports he says he was frequently harassed by other inmates and guards, and took up running laps in the prison yard to deal with the abuse.

Denny repeatedly wrote to the non-profit Innocence Project, which took on his case in 2009 and helped determine his innocence. Denny was exonerated in December 2017 and released.

He now plans to run the United Airlines NYC Half Marathon on March 17 with Sara Doody, who previously worked on his case as an intern.
