The agenda for March 26, 2019, Council meeting is quite heavy.

Mayor and Council will revisit the bylaw concerning the placement of cannabis retail stores as well as Shell Place.

Councillor Mike Allen tabled the current motion in February, which survived the first reading.

Legalization grants municipalities the power to say where cannabis retail stores can open.

However, there is debate over where they can step up shop in relation to sensitive use areas such as schools, hospitals, and recovery centres.

The motion puts forward a 100-meter separation distance from the property line of sensitive areas.

Shell Place

Council will also consider going to work on a feasibility study converting Shell Place into an all-weather indoor stadium.

It would take more time and energy to complete, although the Concept Study cost $21,000.

Early estimates indicate a feasibility study would cost $100,000 and take six months to complete.

However, funding for the study will come from the 2019 Engineering budget.

Transit app

Hold onto your phones: Expect a motion for a transit app.

More accurately, councillor Keith McGrath will introduce the motion for first reading.

It asks for the administration to consider the cost to develop and maintain the service residents would use on their computer, tablet, or handheld device.

The goal of a transit app is to increase the usage of public transportation and enhance customer experience.

Notable new business

Also, now that Wood Buffalo secured the 2022 Arctic Winter Games, they will require volunteers to run them.

The 2022 Arctic Winter Games Host Society would work alongside a Board of Directors to stage and manage the sporting event.

Finally, Council will vote on appointing Jim Peacock as the Municipality’s Integrity Commissioner.

The commissioner is responsible for receiving, examining, and ruling on any complaints with regards to the ethical behaviour of Council.
