Authorities find no evidence of wrongdoing by former mayor

LEWISTON, Maine — Law enforcement agencies say they found no wrongdoing by a former Maine mayor who resigned in the wake of a controversy over leaked text messages, one of which included a racist remark.

Lewiston police and the state attorney general’s office investigated former mayor Shane Bouchard, a Republican, and announced Tuesday that investigators found “no credible evidence of criminal wrongdoing or violations of election laws.”

A woman who contends she had an affair with Bouchard says she leaked emails that the Maine GOP used to attack Bouchard’s Democratic opponent during the mayoral campaign. Heather Berube Everly also later released text messages from Bouchard.

Bouchard’s attorney said in a statement he was grateful for a prompt investigation and said Bouchard was a victim of “false accusations.”
