The lights at Shell Place, Saline Creek Bridge, and Northstar Ford have turned green for the weekend in honour of the Humboldt Broncos hockey team.
Wood Buffalo will also officially recognize Green Shirt Day.
Mayor Don Scott proclaimed April 7 as the day to recognize organ donor awareness and the Logan Boulet effect.
When a family friend passed away, Boulet told his family he wanted to be an organ donor.
Logan Boulet was one of the 16 passengers who lost their lives in the tragic Humboldt Broncos bus crash a year ago.
Thanks to Boulet, six of his organs gave six recipients a new lease on life.
His story inspired over 100,000 to sign donor cards, and make more people aware of organ donation.
The effect prompted governments across Canada to start organ donor registries.
To honour of the team, the “Logan Boulet Effect”, and organ donor awareness, Wood Buffalo residents will wear green shirts.
“Logan’s family, Canadian Blood Services, and the Canadian Transplant Association have partnered to memorialize this act of life-saving generosity with a day dedicated to Organ Donor Awareness and Registration.”
One such organ donor recipient is Fort McMurray native Angela Woods.
She is a public school vice-principal and advocate for organ donor awareness.
