Taking a fresh look at the old arena lands: Downtown revitalization.

Council voted unanimously to revisit the recommendations by the Land Planning and Development Advisory Committee (LPDAC) for downtown revitalization.

“I want something great for that land. It’s really important to our downtown, and the future of our downtown.” Mayor Don Scott said. “This is the first step, so let’s do something great for that land.”

LPDAC did tremendous work in 2015 and 2016 in asking the public which options they would support.

They included a multiplex theatre, urban park, arena or performing arts centre, as well as selling the land or a partnership with private industry.

Unfortunately, the Horse River wildfire and then economic downturn sidetracked the development.

Mayor Scott looked at feedback from residents prior to the wildfire, and new ideas shared by the new and returning populace.

He finds the re-engagement from the region encouraging.

“In my view, it’s time for action, so I’m looking forward to seeing the material that comes back, but I really want us to take action on that land and take a positive step.”

What happens now

In the meantime, the council voted unanimously to an amendment to the 2019 Capital Budget.

Over the next five years, $25 million would go toward developing downtown and the riverfront.

The amendment includes broadening the scope for the riverfront trail project.

Furthermore, this would connect a trail along the Clearwater River from the Syne to Riedel Street.

Next month, the administration returns with a report card based on their findings from residents.

“Between now and May, we’re going to get more feedback, we’re going organize the information that was brought to us before, and hopefully people will just come and talk to us.”
