We are one sleep away from election day in Alberta, and the party leaders are focusing on hotly contested areas.

Edmonton and Calgary remain the focus of the leaders on the final day of campaigning before Tuesday’s vote.

According to Lori Williams at Mount Royal University, she is not shocked to see the leaders, especially Rachel Notley and Jason Kenney focus on Alberta’s two largest cities.

“It looks like the most competitive, remaining part of Alberta is in Calgary. That said though, Jason Kenney is planning to campaign in Edmonton for the rest of the election. Presumably, he doesn’t think that the seats that are leaning NDP are available to him and that he’s strong in the ones leaning UCP.”

Kenney is spending Monday in Edmonton where polls show every seat leaning towards the NDP, while Notley is in Calgary where many of those seats could fall to the UCP.

“We saw in 2012, people making up their minds in the final days or even hours or even as they were going into the polling station,” says Williams

Williams expects Alberta Party leader Stephen Mandel will be campaigning near his home riding in Edmonton which isn’t a lock for him to win. The same is true for Alberta Liberal leader David Khan who will try to win over voters in his riding of Calgary-Mountainview.

After five days of advance polls last week, nearly 700,000 voters cast their ballots, breaking the record of nearly 250,000 in 2015.
