As the anniversary of the Horse River wildfire nears, Wildfire Alberta announced the threat level for wildfires is now set to high.

The area around Fort McMurray and Fort Chipewyan is at risk due to dry, grassy areas.

Such areas are flammable and help wildfires spread rapidly, so Wildfire Alberta says to be careful working or playing outdoors.

Off-highway vehicles may start wildfires, so ensure hotspots are free from debris.

Also, check your muffler and spark arrestor are in working order.

Fire permits are issued on a case-by-case basis.

Check the conditions on your permit and follow safety guidelines.

For more information, call the Fort McMurray Forestry Office at (780) 743-7125.

Wildfire season this year began on March 1, 2019.
