Invasive species of turtles may be in Fort McMurray

Alberta Fish and Wildlife is looking for the owner of a pair of Map turtles, who purchased this invasive species from a dealer in Gibbons last December. If you or someone you know has these turtles, please surrender them at the Fish and Wildlife office on Franklin Avenue or call (780) 743-7200.

Fort McMurray could be home to a pair of turtles that may pose a potential health risk.

Alberta Fish and Wildlife is looking for a woman who bought two turtles last December in Gibbons.

Incorrectly advertised as four-month-old Sawback turtles, Fish and Wildlife say they the Map turtles.

Map turtles are an invasive species and are illegal in Alberta.

The turtles came with a 10-gallon tank, heat and UV lamps, food pellets and calcium all for $250.

The turtles were advertised as Sawback turtles and are actually Map turtles, which can pose a potential health hazard.

Fish and Wildlife say they won’t lay charges if they’re surrendered.

If you or someone you know has these turtles, do not release them into the wild.

Instead, please surrender them to the Fish and Wildlife office at 9915 Franklin Avenue or call 780-743-7200.
