In a unanimous vote of approval, Council adopted the Wood Buffalo Culture Plan.
The ten-year plan would see investment in the region’s arts, culture, entertainment, heritage initiatives.
Mayor Don Scott says the plan sets the course for development in Wood Buffalo.
“Culture plays a fundamental role in the community and contributes to the quality of life, reconciliation, and social, economic and environmental well-being. I look forward to local culture thriving in the decade ahead.”
Additionally, the 2018-2021 Strategic Plan mandates support for the arts along with heritage projects.
The Culture Plan highlights ways to sustain a rich, vibrant community for current and future residents.
It also contributes to reconciliation with Indigenous and Métis peoples.
Furthermore, the Culture Plan promotes innovation and accessibility for all residents.
With its adoption, the Municipality commits to work alongside the advisory committee to implement this new plan.

- Council voted on the Culture Plan on May 14, 2019.
- The Culture Plan’s advisory committee consists of local groups: Arts Council Wood Buffalo, Fort McMurray Heritage Society, Fort McMurray Tourism, Keyano Theatre & Arts Centre, McMurray Metis (MNA Local 1935), Multicultural Association of Wood Buffalo, Oil Sands Community Alliance, Regional Recreation Corporation of Wood Buffalo, and Suncor Energy Centre for the Performing Arts.
- The committee also receives support from the Government of Alberta’s Alberta Federation for the Arts.
- Additionally, council will receive bi-annual progress reports from the Wood Buffalo Culture Plan advisory committee.
