After a long hiatus, the Keyano Recital Theatre welcomes another Shakespearian play to the stage.

‘Theatre; Just Because’ presents their adaptation of the classic, Macbeth, opening Thursday, May 23.

However, actor Norm Sutton says don’t expect castles and chain mail.

“It’s modern in that they have not got castle set pieces, traditional armour, and weapons. It is very much a modernistic take on the production.”

Since March of this year, the crew prepared for this week’s performances.

Although shortened for time, the language, text, and verbiage in Shakespeare’s Macbeth remain the same.

The difference is in the casting.

Jenny Price, who will play the role of Macbeth, appreciates this production’s interesting perspective.

“One of the things I’m really enjoying about this show is that our director, Justin Shaw, said in the casting process, ‘I don’t care if you’re male or female. I’m looking for the right person for the part.”

Traditional roles for male and female characters in the play are open to both genders.

It also presents new opportunities for cast members to show their skills.

Norm Sutton, who plays the role of King Duncan, says men played both male and female characters during Shakespeare’s time.

He says audiences will take to Jenny Price’s portrayal of Macbeth.

“Jenny is an amazing actress. She puts an intensity on the role that is second to none.”

The ‘Theatre; Just Because’ engaging and interesting adaptation of Macbeth runs from May 23-25, 2019.
