Days after the mayor and council adopted the Wood Buffalo Culture Plan, a pair of local groups announced their plan to promote cultural diversity in the arts.

The Multicultural Association of Wood Buffalo (MCA) and Arts Council Wood Buffalo (ACWB) signed an agreement to build awareness for arts and heritage in our region.

Titled the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), the agreement encourages accessibility, diversity, and inclusion.

MCA President Dango Gogo says those values are really important with both groups.

“We are excited to be working with Arts Council, particularly following the RMWB’s recent adoption of a new Culture Plan. We are looking forward to collaborating on long-term sustainable approaches to celebrate and nurture this important aspect of our region.”

Common themes

The MCA and ACWB would address common issues in this MOU.

First, build long-term relationships promoting development and awareness for culture and the arts.

Also, facilitate communication between multicultural groups, private industry, and government on the subject of the arts and heritage.

Finally, work together in finding the right resources to help build awareness in Wood Buffalo.

ACWB Board Chair, Dave Boutilier, says the MOU allows both groups to work more closely together on these issues.

“Formalizing our relationship with the MCA is the first step in working even more closely together to foster culture, heritage, and arts awareness by building relationships and creating community connections for the short- and long-term benefit of our region.”

Next, the MCA and ACWB will form a joint action plan and assist in implementing the Wood Buffalo Culture Plan.
