Mayor and council look forward the Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM) conference and trade show in Quebec City.
Mayor Don Scott views this as a great opportunity to engage with elected officials from across the country.
“We are going to spend a lot of time shaking hands, talking to people, explaining what’s going on in this region, and take every opportunity to meet everybody we can.”
Adding to his optimism is the Senate committee’s recommendation to defeat Bill C-48.
Also, B.C. courts’ approval of the Trans Mountain expansion project in the previous week is a plus for Alberta business.
To that end, Mayor Scott says the focus of the trip will be energy infrastructure.
“We support the hydro projects that are going on in Quebec’s municipalities. I want to see the people of Quebec succeed. There [are] energy projects all across Canada, and we want to make sure everybody understands the projects going on in this region.”
This will be the mayor’s first trip east since he spoke in Ottawa about Bill C-69 as part of the Coalition of Canadian Municipalities for Energy Action.
Of course, Mayor Scott will also extend invitations to officials at the FCM conference to visit Wood Buffalo.
He describes it as a “perfect world” scenario informing people about what is happening in the region.
“When people realize what’s happening in this region their thought about it changes significantly, so to me it’s really important that people not only talk about this region, but they have a good understanding of it.”
Accompanying Mayor Scott will be councillors Mike Allen, Krista Balsom, Sheila Lalonde, Verna Murphy, Jeff Peddle and Claris Voyageur.
Also making the trip is CAO Annette Antoniak and other staff members.
The FCM conference runs from May 30 – June 2, 2019.
