Kicking off the summer, Tree Canada will embark on a massive tree planting project.

On the drive towards Timberlea, the non-profit group says the hill next to Confederation Way will be the site to plant 5000 trembling aspen seedlings.

Regional Fire Chief Jody Butz says the seedlings are deciduous and FireSmart-approved.

“When we think about the term FireSmart, we often think about the vegetation management projects we conduct to remove fuels and hazards from our forests, but we’re also working closely with groups like Tree Canada to re-plant FireSmart-approved trees in our community.”

Crews will be hard at work over the next few days planting the seedlings.

Tree Canada helped in planting 83,000 trees in Wood Buffalo since the May 2016 wildfire.

The urban forest area is the focus of this particular campaign.

The Municipality also wants to re-grow this area and restore the natural landscape in a safe manner.

“When it comes down to it,” Butz said, “it’s all about planting the right tree in the right place.”

This is the final week to submit grant applications for Tree Canada’s Operation ReLeaf.

The deadline to apply is June 3, 2019.

Use caution at tree planting sites as seedlings damage easily due to their small size.
