The third annual Winky Day raised $4,530 for animals in need at the Fort McMurray SPCA (FMSPCA).

Every year our region’s only animal welfare agency partners up with Winky Rides/Greb Glides in honour of local canine celebrity Winky, his predecessor Greb and their owner, Sandy MacDonald.

MacDonald and his furry sidekick have travelled over 160,000 kilometers on motorcycle raising awareness and money for the FMSPCA and the Winky Rides/Greb Glides Cause for Paws fund.

To date the fund has raised a total of $116,878 for the rehabilitation and care of present and future animals in need at the FMSPCA.

“Their contributions are vital to our continued success and the work that we do,” said Arianna Johnson, FMSPCA Executive Director. “Being a charity that works mostly off donations and not grants, these types of third-party fundraisers and supporters and advocates are really how we do what we do.”

It can cost the Fort McMurray SPCA over $5,000 to care for an animal with behavioral needs and depending on the litter size, it can cost over $11,000 to take care of a pregnant animal.

The FMSPCA has been at full capacity this winter and continues to work to ensure they can provide the best services to every animal.

Their next two fundraisers will be Locked in a Kennel on Friday, June 14 and Putting for Paws on Friday, June 21.
