Three drivers were charged with impaired driving between July 9 and July 11.

The Wood Buffalo Integrated Traffic Unit (ITU) was taking part in a check stop on Highway 881 on July 9, around 10:30 p.m.

A vehicle tried to evade the check stop so officers attempted to stop the vehicle, but due to speeds reached had to stop for public safety.

That vehicle was later found abandoned and the 27-year-old driver from Fort Saskatchewan was found.

He was charged with:

  • Impaired operation motor vehicle
  • Impaired operation motor vehicle over .08
  • Flight from Peace Officer
  • Take motor vehicle without consent
  • Operate a motor vehicle while criminally suspended (x2)
  • Dangerous operation motor vehicle

Two people were found to be driving impaired on July 11.

Around 3:45 p.m. an off-duty officer stopped a vehicle that was being driven erratically in the downtown area.

The off-duty officer was able to confiscate the keys before arresting the driver and passing him on to uniformed members.

The 56-year-old man from Fort McMurray provided breath samples reaching almost four times the legal limit.

He was charged with impaired operation of a motor vehicle, and impaired operation of a motor vehicle over .08.

Around 11:50 p.m. ITU noted a vehicle on Highway 63 being driven upwards of 170 km/h in a posted 110 km/h zone.

Police arrested a 43-year-old man from Fort McMurray.

He was charged with impaired operation of a motor vehicle, impaired operation of a motor vehicle over .08 and dangerous operation of a motor vehicle.

The names of all three drivers can’t be released pending the swearing in of charges.

All three drivers will appear in Fort McMurray Provincial Court.
