Fort McMurray International Airport (YMM) has ranked third in Canada for on-time commercial departures.

Of the 505 airports surveyed by OAG Aviation Group Ltd., 20 of them were in Canada.

President and CEO of the Fort McMurray Airport Authority, RJ Steenstra, said in a statement that it takes coordination and teamwork to ensure a quality experience for customers.

“At times flights coming in from other airports can create departure delays. Between our airline partners and concession teams, we do everything we can to make-up that time and create a good experience for our customers.”

Last year, around 640,000 passengers traveled through YMM on 6,094 flights.

That’s an average of 508 commercial flights a month.

“As a vital economic corridor to the north, YMM’s level of performance instills current and future investor confidence that people, skilled labour and goods can flow in and out of the region with ease.” said Kevin Weidlich, President and CEO, Wood Buffalo Economic Development Corporation.

The airport said that signs are pointing to increased traffic for tourism and conferences.

As the municipality gets set to host the National and International Communities in Bloom Symposium and Awards Ceremony in 2020 and the Arctic Winter Games in 2022, YMM is expecting to process thousands of visitors from all over the world.

Grande Prairie Airport and Kelowna International Airport ranked as the top tow airports in Canada.
