Police were busy keeping the roads safe from distracted and dangerous driving.

Wood Buffalo Integrated Traffic Unit (ITU) handed out 222 tickets to motorists during the August long weekend.

That number comes from the Gregoire detachment alone.

Curb distracted driving

Distracted driving is one traffic offence that a driver can easily avoid.

First, put away smartphones or set them to ‘do not disturb’ or aeroplane mode while driving.

This reduces the temptation to check them and lose focus on the road.

Should you make a phone call, or respond to a text, safely pull over to the side of the road.

Next, set your air conditioning, mirrors, car seat and music choice prior to hitting the road.

Ensure your passengers are secure as well.

Finally, when driving children on long road trips, make sure they are comfortable and properly restrained in their seats.

Giving them something fun and entertaining to do during the drive eliminates possible distractions from you and them.
