FuseSocial announced they chose Janelle Ormond as the first recipient of the Sana Elache Memorial Community Leadership Bursary.

Ormond volunteers with Big Brothers, Big Sisters Wood Buffalo.

She qualified for the bursary by applying for the 2019-20 Leadership Wood Buffalo cohort.

Ormond said she’s excited to participate in this year’s cohort.

“Being the recipient of the Sana Elache bursary is an honour as I will be participating in this valuable community program, knowing that I am doing so under the legacy of a respected leader. I hope to learn and grow from this opportunity with the spirit of her principles close to mind.”

Exemplary leadership

The bursary recognizes the life of multicultural advocate Sana Elache.

She served as the founding Executive Director of Leadership Wood Buffalo.

Elache also served as board president for the Multicultural Association of Wood Buffalo (MCA).

Executive Director for FuseSocial, Chantal Beaver said Elache was a champion of leadership in the region.

When deciding the recipient, Beaver said all the applicants showed skill and promise, but Ormond took the lead.

“It’s important to have this bursary support someone who is focused on developing their skills on both a personal and community level. Janelle is a clear example of the type of leader that should be the recipient of this bursary and we are looking forward to seeing how she, and the rest of our 2019-2020 cohort, grow from this years’ program.”

Members of Leadership Wood Buffalo Alumni, FuseSocial Board members along with the Social Profit community comprised the selection committee.

Also, the recipient of the bursary would receive one full paid tuition for the year.

The committee graded Ormond and the applicants according to the Five Practices of Exemplary Leadership.

Ormond scored well in each of the five tenants: Modeling the Way, Inspiring a Shared Vision, Challenging the Process, Enabling Others to Act, and Encouraging the Heart.
