Mexican women knit hearts at memorial for murdered females

MEXICO CITY — A small group of women has constructed a memorial for murdered women made of hand-knit hearts in the Alameda park of Mexico City.

The knit-in on Saturday came on the heels of rowdy protests sparked by outrage over bungled investigations into alleged rapes of teenagers by local policemen. The protests have heightened demands for action to stem the violence that many women experience in Mexico.

A 2018 government survey found that four out of five women in the country don’t feel safe. The United Nations says two out of five women in Mexico will experience sexual violence, such as unwanted groping or rape, during their lifetimes and that nine women are murdered every day in the country.
