Wood Buffalo’s unemployment rate continued to rise in August.

According to the August labour force survey done by Statistics Canada, the unemployment rate for Wood Buffalo-Cold Lake was 6.3 per cent, up 0.3 per cent year over year.

While that’s the same as April 2019, the rate did decrease up until July when it rose back up to 5.9 per cent.

The provincial unemployment rate also increased from 6.8 to 7.2 per cent.

Nationwide, Statistics Canada is also reporting a slight increase from 5.5 per cent to 5.8 per cent.

It also says there was a boost of over 81,000 net new jobs in Canada, mostly part-time and picked up by young people.
