Kevin Hines will be visiting Fort McMurray.

Hines, is a mental health advocate, award-winning global speaker, bestselling author and documentary filmmaker.

He’s also known as one of 34 people to fall from the Golden Gate Bridge and survive.

Some Other Solutions (SOS) along with Suncor are putting on The Truth About Suicide on Sept. 24 at MacDonald Island.

Linda Solvdi, health and wellness manager with SOS said the idea originated when they noticed an increase in clients suffering from loss due to suicide.

“In three months we were already much higher in numbers than we were for the full previous year,” said Solvdi

From there they hosted a screening of Hines’ documentary Suicide the Ripple Effect, which sold out.

While arranging the screening, Lize Bam, health and wellness coordinator said they thought having the community hear his story first hand would be a great resource.

She said that Hines will speak about individuals living mentally healthy lifestyle and how friends and family can support them.

“Watching out, looking after each other, asking ‘are you okay?’, ‘is there something I can do for you?’ when you see that someone might be struggling,” said Bam.

Solvdi said the more knowledge we have and are provided the better we can help people.

“For those who are struggling and suffering on their own, just come and let’s get you into community and to live another day,” said Solvdi.

Hines will speak at noon and 6:30 p.m.

Tickets can be purchased through eventbrite.

Some Other Solutions also offers a survivors of suicide support group, which can be attended after the presentation.
