Two kids from the region received top honours from the province.
They were among 16 young Albertans honoured at the 2019 Great Kids Awards on Sept. 15, 2019.
Minister of Children’s Services, Rebecca Schulz, said it’s an honour to award young people, whose positive attitudes inspired and changed lives.
“Their accomplishments and positivity in the face of adversity will only serve to bring people together, build stronger communities and improve the lives of everyone around them.”
The province recognized two youth from Fort McMurray: Eight-year-old Blaire Decker and 14-year-old Charles Ancheta.
Blaire Decker
Decker’s courage and compassion helped to overcome the daily medical challenges of Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome, which is a genetic connective tissue disorder.
Decker must use a wheelchair as well as make medical appointments in Edmonton.
Often missing classes and her friends, she is still one of the best academic students in her class.
Her optimism and wisdom shone through even after she and her family lost their home in the 2016 wildfire.
Decker remained an example of maturity, strength, hope and compassion in her school.
Congratulations to Father Beauregard School student Blaire Decker! She is a recipient of the 2019 Great Kids Award! https://t.co/NVH1uwhNqp#WeAreFMCSD #ymm #rmwb @YourAlberta
