Alberta Culture Days recognized Fort McMurray for its local flavour

The government of Alberta listed the city as one of five finalists with notable events between Sept. 27-29.

Arts Council Wood Buffalo Executive Director, Liana Wheeldon made the announcement at Keyano College.

Also, Divine Group of India held a Rangoli art demonstration during the ceremony.

Wheeldon said it was exciting to learn the province picked Fort McMurray as a finalist.

“It’s definitely an honour to have Fort McMurray nominated as a feature celebration site. We definitely have some incredible talent, so to be able to showcase it is great.”

Wheeldon added the recognition is the icing on the cake.

Funding from the Alberta government would go towards local artists and performers featured in Alberta Culture Days celebrations.

‘IgNight’ features a weekend-long bus tour to several illuminated, night time, public art pieces on display throughout Fort McMurray.

Also, award-winning local writer Therese Greenwood leads a workshop helping new writers deal with their feelings about the 2016 wildfire in prose.

Furthermore, the Suncor Energy Centre for the Performing Arts hosts a multicultural arts showcase on Sept. 28. 2019.

The night features the Bengali Association of Fort McMurray, Divine Group of India, and the Hindu Cultural Society.

Finally, ‘Rock The Rails’ embraces skate culture with live music, a video game tournament, and a graffiti art demonstration.
