Chicago preservationists say an old coal-fired power plant shouldn’t be demolished because it’s a monument to the city’s roots to its industrial past.
The group Preservation Chicago is trying to find a developer to save Union Station Power House, which was built in city’s downtown area in the 1930s. The Amtrak-owned power house closed in 2011 after supplying energy to run Union Station and nearby infrastructure.
Ward Miller, who heads the preservation group, told the Chicago Sun-Times this week that the building should be saved for future generations to enjoy.
Amtrak spokesman Marc Magliari says the structure is deteriorating and presents safety concerns. But he added that Amtrak has agreed to consider proposals for its preservation and reuse.
Last year, Amtrak unsuccessfully solicited proposals for the reuse of the structure.
