Cuba's historical generation leaves top legislative body

HAVANA — State media say Cuba’s top legislative body will no longer include any members of the country’s historical generation of former rebels as part of a broader constitutional reform meant to separate the responsibilities of the all-powerful presidency.

Members of the National Assembly were voting for a list of 21 candidates for the Council of State, which oversees the passage of new laws. The country’s president once headed the council. Under this year’s reform, that role passes to the head of the National Assembly, who has some oversight of the president of the country.

The reform shrinks the Council of State from 31 to 21 members. Thursday’s vote includes four new members of the council. As part of that change, ex-rebels Ramiro Valdés and Guillermo García Frías are off the council.
