North American stock markets up at late-morning; Loonie trades higher

TORONTO — Canada’s main stock index headed higher in late-morning trading, helped by gains the key financial and industrials sectors, while U.S. stock markets also climbed higher.

The S&P/TSX composite index was up 52.22 points at 16,429.34.

In New York, the Dow Jones industrial average was up 21.16 points at 26,791.36. The S&P 500 index was up 15.65 points at 3,001.85, while the Nasdaq composite was up 62.85 points at 8,152.39.

The Canadian dollar traded for 76.33 cents US compared with an average of 76.15 cents US on Friday.

The December crude contract was down 43 cents at US$53.44 per barrel and the November natural gas contract was down 10.0 cents at US$2.220 per mmBTU.

The December gold contract was down 30 cents per pound at US$1,493.80 an ounce and the December copper contract was up 1.55 cents at US$2.6515 a pound.
