Ex-San Diego sheriff’s captain arrested for gun sales

SAN DIEGO — Federal agents have arrested a former San Diego sheriff’s captain along with a deputy and several others in connection to gun trafficking.

The arrests Friday were the latest in a string of cases involving current and former law enforcement officers in Southern California selling guns reserved for police illegally to the public to make a profit.

Prosecutors say former Capt. Marco Garmo operated the gun trafficking business and was helped by Lt. Fred Magana and three others, including prominent San Diego jeweler Leo Hamel. Garmo was arrested at his home Friday.

He could not be reached for comment. Garmo has said in the past he is a gun collector.

Prosecutors say Garmo sold more than 100 firearms.

Hamel and Magana pleaded guilty in federal court to the charges.
