The Wood Buffalo Food Bank (WBFB) exceeded its funding goal through the annual Syncrude Food Drive.

Hundreds of volunteers were stationed outside various stores between Nov. 29 and Dec. 1 collecting food, money and gift card donations.

Executive Director of WBFB, Dan Edwards said after two last minute donations they raised $300,197.

That funding goes into the annual budget which runs programming and maintains the cost of the building and staff. It also goes towards purchasing food when necessary.

While, they fell about 8000 lbs. short of the food goal, 71,520 lbs. was raised during the event.

“It’s quality over quantity and the quality of the food that came in was fantastic. Some things just don’t weight a lot. Cereal and toilet paper and some of the hygiene items just don’t weight a lot but it’s what we need.”

Edwards said the food raised over the three day period should last two to three months, just in time for the Spring Food Drive.

He said canned meats and soups, pasta sauces and pasta are things that are always something that can be used by the food bank.

The Corporate Challenge, a 12-hour radiothon on Country 93.3 and 97.7 ROCK raised around $252,500.
