Christmas Kettle Campaign only halfway to goal

As Christmas nears, the Salvation Army of Fort McMurray’s annual Kettle Campaign is in need of urgent support.

Major Steve Hibbs said they are only halfway to their $200,000 goal.

“We understand that times are tough for many in our community. We have seen in the past that when times are tough, our community stands together to support their neighbours.”

All donations dropped into the red kettle support local year-round programs from hot meals and warm clothes to housing services and job programs.

From Mondays to Saturdays, volunteers will be at kettles at Canadian Tire, Michelle’s Independent, Real Canadian Superstore, Save-On Stoneycreek, Sobeys Thickwood and Walmart.

Residents can also find a kettle at Peter Pond Mall from Thursdays to Saturdays.

However, Major Steve Hibbs said there are still volunteer shifts left to fill.

“We have a number of two-hour shifts in urgent need of volunteers this week. If a kettle isn’t out, it cannot collect donations.”

Potential volunteers may register by calling (587) 646-0981.

While standing by the red kettles, volunteers hand out candy canes and thank all donors for their support.

If cash isn’t to hand, then the Salvation Army can accept donations through debit, credit card or cheques.

A local artwork auction in support of the Salvation Army, which is called “Art for the Kettles” is currently accepting bids as well online.

“Whether you donate financially or give your time to volunteer at a Kettle, you are helping us help others,” Said Major Steve Hibbs, “and for that, we thank you.”

To make an online cash donation, go to the Salvation Army’s Fill The Kettle website.

The campaign ends on December 23, 2019.
