CEO of Fort McMurray Airport named vice chair of Canadian Airports Council Board of Directors

The CEO and president of the Fort McMurray International Airport, RJ Steenstra, has been appointed as the vice chair of the Canadian Airports Council (CAC) Board of Directors.

Steenstra has served as the Canadian Airports Council Regional Director for central Canada where he acted as the voice of the country’s regional airports.

“Moving into the Vice Chair role, my focus will be on evolving our governance model and ensure the industry continues to be positioned to tackle emerging issues and opportunities facing airports across Canada, including regional airports such as YMM,” said Steenstra in a press release.

Steenstra’s has also contributed to the airport industry by serving as director for the Northwest Chapter of the American Association of Airport Executives, Director of the International Civil Aviation Organization and Airports Council International (ACI) – World, Community of Practice and Vice Chair for the International Association of Airport Executives Canada.

He is also currently serving as Board Director for ACI-North America, representing airports throughout the U.S. and Canada.

“Canada’s air transportation industry is built on regional airports and the communities they serve,” said Daniel Robert Gooch, President of CAC in a press release. “Based on RJ’s experience at YMM and leadership in the industry, I am confident he will help realize CAC’s full potential as it tackles important air transportation issues.”

Steenstra is an active leader in the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo with his commitment to enhancing economic growth and quality of life services in the region. Another title he holds is the director on the inaugural Wood Buffalo Economic Corporation’s Board of Directors and member of the Livability Taskforce. He also served as Vice Chair of the 2022 Wood Buffalo Arctic Winter Games Bid Committee and Chair of the Fort McMurray Chamber of Commerce Business Awards Committee in 2019.
