The future of Métis communities in northern Alberta will be the topic of discussion on Feb. 26, 2020.

Métis leaders shall assemble in Fort McMurray for an in-camera meeting that day to discuss a new structure of Métis representation and their relationship with the Métis Nation of Alberta (MNA).

They expect to make a joint statement at a press conference on Feb. 27, 2020.

Spokesperson Morten Paulsen said this announcement may have province-wide or national implications.

He added leaders will also share their thoughts on the withdrawal of the Teck Frontier mine proposal.

This follows a government of Alberta decision on Feb. 14 to grant the Fort McKay Métis the right of consultation on land development that could impact Métis Aboriginal rights.

The press conference takes place at the Clearwater Hotel on Feb. 27 at 11:00 a.m.
