Another midwife is on the way for Wood Buffalo.

Kayla Lushman, co-Chair of the Wood Buffalo Woman and Baby Care Association (WBWBCA) announced a second midwife for the region.

“We’re expecting our second midwife to be here attending births by summer.”

Lushman said there is no shortage of demand for midwifery services in Fort McMurray.

Residents already booked with registered midwife Debbie Mpofu through to September, with another 50 expectant mothers on a waiting list.

“We are exceeding capacity.” Said Kayla Lushman, “The demand for midwifery in our community is huge, so the more midwives we can get our team the better.”

Lushman added more midwives in Wood Buffalo means more options and help for families.

Midwinter Soiree

Events like the Midwinter Soiree help to generate resources for midwifery and prenatal care services.

WBWBCA co-Chair Jennifer Stephenson said she hopes the 2nd annual fundraiser would help them also reach their long-term goals for the community.

“Our long-term goal is to open a woman and baby care facility. It will have a birth centre, prenatal supports, counselling supports, [and we’re] hoping to have some spaces that can be rented by massage therapists [and] acupuncturists, so it can have all of those things in there.”

Fort McMurray averages 1300 babies per year.

Stephenson added sponsorship opportunities are available for the event.

The Midwinter Soiree begins March 14, 2020, at 7:00 p.m. at the Fort McMurray Golf Club.
