Northern Alberta Métis communities end membership in MNAA

Six northern Alberta Métis communities have voted to end membership in the Metis Nation of Alberta (MNAA).

The decision has led to the formation of the Alberta Métis Federation, which will allow communities to share information and resources, however, it will not be the negotiator or recipient of funding.

President Ron Quintal said during an announcement on Feb. 26, that the decision would make their ancestors proud.

“We shrugged off the corrupt and self-serving MNAA and have taken our own futures in our own hands.”

Quintal added that they expect more communities to leave the MNAA.

Athabasca Landing, Owl River, Willow Lake, Lakeland, Chard and Fort McKay are all under the umbrella of the new federation.
