Some of Canada’s best badminton athletes will be coming to the region at the end of March.

Badminton Canada, which is a part of the Badminton World Federation, will host the YONEX Canadian International Challenge 2020 at MacDonald Island Park from March 31 to April 5.

Nearly 200 players and 100 delegates and coaches from around the world are expected to attend, making it the biggest single-sport international event to be hosted in Fort McMurray.

Mayor Don Scott shared his excitement.

“As hosts of the YONEX Canadian International Challenge, we have an opportunity to showcase our region and world-class facilities and to cheer on Canada’s best badminton athletes as they pursue their dreams of Olympic qualification.”

Athletes will compete to earn world ranking points that count towards Olympic qualification.

The Tokyo 2020 Olympic qualifying period ends April 26.

Spectators are welcome to attend for free throughout the week.
