UPDATE: Keyano College announces cancellations, addresses rumours

Last Updated Mar 13, 2020 at 5:09 pm MDT

Keyano College released a statement regarding COVID-19 and coronavirus concerns.

The post-secondary institution said there are no confirmed cases of the virus within the College.

It also said they would not report on individual testing results.

The statement follows an internal document Keyano College sent to staff and students on March 7.

Keyano College said they issued that document for transparency, and not to generate fear or panic.

As of the publication of this article, all employee test results for COVID-19 came back negative.

The school would support staff and students who may require self-isolation or remain home due to cold or flu-like symptoms.

“Self-isolation is a precautionary measure and does not mean that the person is infected with COVID-19 and while the worldwide situation is evolving, the risk for Albertans is still considered low at this time.”

Keyano College said they will monitor and respond to new information about the coronavirus outbreak.

Aligning with the province’s health restrictions on public gatherings, facilities within the College will have new guidelines.

First, Keyano College cancelled or postponed all public shows at Keyano Theatre for the rest of March.

Anyone who purchased tickets for specific shows may qualify for refunds.

Keyano College said they will grant access to staff, tenants and their customers.

No students will work in the centre.

Hours for staff are Monday to Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Leaseholders within the school grounds will operate.

The school formed an internal response team to address potential contingencies.

Cleaning procedures in all offices and common areas are currently underway.

Its soon-to-be-released messaging system shall relay any urgent messaging to share with staff, students, and the College’s leaseholders.

“Our top priority is the health and safety of our staff and students, as well as the public at large. In the event that testing determines an individual is a presumptive or confirmed case, the College will follow the guidance of Alberta Health Services, the Government of Alberta, and appropriate federal agencies.”

Keyano College created a web page for staff, students, and residents to view the most up-to-date and accurate information on COVID-19 and coronavirus.
