Syncrude to have non-essential employees work from home

Syncrude has transitioned to have all non-essential employees work from home.

Media Relations Advisor, Will Gibson said that the move was done as a precaution as the number of COVID-19 cases continues to rise.

He said that everyone has been advised to follow the guidance of Alberta Health Services.

“Asking non-essential people to work from home is something that is conformed with what everybody’s been talking about, about maintaining distance, so reducing the number of people on our sites made sense for us.”

As an organization, Gibson said that emergency plans have been in place well before COVID-19 from past respiratory illnesses like H1N1 and SARS.

He noted that they’ve worked with minimal staff as recently as the 2016 Horse River Wildfire.
