The Wood Buffalo Food Bank (WBFB) continues to provide food for those in need during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Dan Edwards, executive director of WBFB said that while stock is low in stores, they still have food to make hampers.

He said perishables have only gone down a little bit, but they don’t have a lot of meat proteins.

“We’re facing that due to some of the mass buying that has happened, and so therefore the stores where we would also purchase from don’t have the stock available for us.”

Edwards recommended donations of canned meats, vegetables and fruits as a lot of them go into hampers.

He also noted that they don’t have any diapers in size five and six.

Due to the pandemic, WBFB has decided to postpone its Servus Spring Food Drive, which was to be held April 5 & 6.

The food drive is one of their biggest food raisers of the year, and Edwards said having to postpone it affects the “flow” of the food bank as it brings in three to four months of food.

“We aren’t in any immediate danger, but any donations do help.”

Last year, the food drive brought in around 40,000 to 50,000 lbs. of food.

While WBFB remains open, they are not accepting any volunteers.

“We will remain open until I am told by higher ups of Alberta Health Services that I have to close.”

Donations can be brought to WBFB or placed in the designated bin at local grocery stores.

Edwards also said that their Facebook page is the best place to get accurate information.
