Financial support on the way for Albertans as COVID-19 cases reach 119

EDMONTON — While speaking at the Alberta Legislature, Premiere Jason Kenney announced 22 new cases of COVID-19 in Alberta, bringing the total in the province up to 119.

Premier Kenney also announcing new measures to help Albertans through this difficult time.

There will be a bridging mechanism of $50M for Albertans who are self-isolating.

A payment of $573 per week for a total of two weeks will be given to those who self-isolate. Those looking to apply can do so on Alberta.ca by next week.

The premier also announcing a shield for utility payments for 3 months, ensuring that the power, heat, and water don’t go out for anyone.

Students will also be covered in the form of a six-month moratorium on student loans.

Those who bank with ATB will be able to apply for a deferral on their ATB loans, lines of credit, and mortgages for up to six months.

As for those who own businesses in Alberta, the government will be deferring the collection of corporate income tax balances and installment payments, due after March 18, until Aug 21.

This is believed to give businesses access to about $1.5B in funds to help pay employees, address debts, and continue operations.

“In these exceptional circumstances, having cash on hand is vital to families and employers and it’s critical we give Albertans this certainty and support,” Finance Minister Travis Toews said.
