April 2 is Autism Awareness Day in the RMWB.

The Autism Society of the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo is not able to physically support their members during this time however they are available virtually.

Carla Power, member of the Autism Society said parents could always reach out.

“We’re always via phone and email. Our Community Development Officer, Nicole Spring, is available during office hours to take calls and direct parents where else they could also get support.”

The Autism Society can order sensory needs items and helps connect families to support groups.

“We want to let the community know that we’re still here and we’re still available for you, anything you need, you can call or email us, and we will try to find a way to help you.”

Power’s four year-old son has Autism.

“We’re very fortunate that we found the Autism Society and we feel very supported by all the people in our community.”

For her Autism Awareness Day is more about sharing what it is like to live with Autism and how we can support others through it.

“Its not just being aware of what autism is, its understanding and accepting.”

This year the big campaign focuses on the understanding that the behaviors of autistic people need to be accepted.

People can wear the colour blue, red or rainbow to create awareness and share the message #youbeyou.

“I think our big message is sharing stories and uplifting messages about living with Autism.”

Power recommends people follow the Autism Society Facebook page and website to learn more.

The Autism Society has had to postpone a lot of their events due to the pandemic but will be back up and running to support the community when they can.
