Quebec has asked for help from the Armed Forces in the province’s north amid the COVID-19 crisis, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said on Friday.

The request has been granted and Trudeau said the military is ready to help the province’s northern communities prepare to respond to novel coronavirus outbreaks.

Speaking through a translator, Trudeau noted the help will be for isolated and remote communities, and that Rangers will provide assistance with things like setting up tents and medical infrastructure. More details on numbers and other duties were expected later on Friday, he said.

Meanwhile, the government has announced it is sending $100-million in funding to organizations that provide food to the most vulnerable, such as Food Banks Canada and the Salvation Army, as well as for Indigenous communities.

Trudeau also announced a federal agreement with Amazon to help distribute needed medical supplies to provinces in need.
