CALGARY (660 NEWS) – Seven additional people have died from coronavirus in Alberta. Chief Medical Officer of Health, Dr. Deena Hinshaw says it’s the deadliest day so far of the virus pandemic in Alberta.

“This is the highest number of deaths we have seen in a single day.”

Four of the seven are at Calgary McKenzie Towne continuing care facility for a total of 17 deaths.

Alberta’s total death count is 39.

Hinshaw also confirmed 49 new cases of the virus for a total of 1,500 province-wide.

713 Albertans have recovered.

Following the new numbers, the Alberta government is taking new steps to help prevent the spread of the virus.

Hinshaw says new rules are being implemented at continuing care facilities. This means all workers must be required to wear face masks when working around residents, even if they are not showing any symptoms.

“In addition to new masking requirements, we are requiring all workers in continuing care facilities to work at only one site.”

“This will help prevent the spread of illness between facilities. These requirements are currently in effect at outbreak locations but will now be required in all long-term care and supportive living sites across the province,” she added.
