The Municipality and the Canadian Red Cross announced a partnership to help support people evacuated because of flooding.

“The Municipality is pleased to announce this important partnership with the Canadian Red Cross,” said Mayor Don Scott. “The Red Cross is a key partner in our region, including in response and recovery from the 2016 wildfire and we look forward to again working with them in support of our residents during this time. We ask all residents under mandatory evacuation to please register with the Red Cross. This partnership will well serve the community as we do everything we can to ensure all available supports are in place for those that have been impacted by this historic event.”

The partnership is to support evacuated residents, will utilize local expertise and not duplicate existing initiatives.

“The Canadian Red Cross is committed to support the people of the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo in this difficult time,” said Jenn McManus, Vice President, Canadian Red Cross, Alberta and Northwest Territories. “We encourage anyone affected by the flooding to please register with Red Cross, so together with the Municipality, we can help ensure people get the information and assistance they need.”

In a statement, the Canadian Red Cross said a call line is now available for everyone under mandatory evacuation.

“Registration ensures people are accounted for, can be contacted while away from home, and can be reached with information and assistance on further services that may be available during the evacuation and recovery period.”

Evacuees who have already registered with the Municipality should also register with the Red Cross to ensure that they can be reached with information and assistance on further services that may be available.

To register with the Red Cross call 1-800-863-6582 between 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.

Mandatory Evacuation Orders remain in effect for Draper, Waterways, Taiga Nova Industrial Park and the Lower Townsite of Fort McMurray.
