As the region recovers from the 2020 River Break Up Flood, scammers already started contacting residents.
The Canadian Red Cross confirmed residents received fraudulent text messages and claims for pre-approval asking they click a link to complete registration.
Such messages are not valid and the organization asks anyone who receives them to delete the messages immediately.
The Red Cross announced financial relief for households impacted during the flood.
Vice-president for Alberta and Northwest Territories, Jennifer McManus said residents may apply for a one-time payment of $600 per household.
“People who registered with the Red Cross and were under mandatory evacuation from their primary residence in Fort McMurray and [surrounding] areas due to flooding will receive a one-time payment per household to help meet their re-entry needs.”
McManus added this may include food, laundry supplies, cleaning supplies, transportation and personal items.
The funds are separate from the provincial government’s previously announced $1,250 emergency benefit.

McManus said Red Cross would provide most funds to approved and validated applicants via e-transfer.
If that service is unavailable, she said the organization would contact residents to bring identification on their next visit to their Franklin Ave. office.
Residents may apply at 1-800-863-6582 between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m.
McManus also warned residents not to provide information until the Canadian Red Cross provided them with a registration number.
